You become a new person the first time you have to speak without something to stand behind or lean on. If given the option, every single person will hide behind a podium. Public speaking is scary because we convince ourselves that the audience is the enemy.
Naturally, placing a barrier between you and the people you see as your enemy makes you feel safe. Add notes to the top of the podium and you have a cocoon to deflect attacks.
Your fears are rational, the audience can destroy you in so many ways. What if you forget what to say or stumble over your words or your voice cracks? You could fall and get laughed at. Maybe you are boring!! What if people leave?
All of these scenarios do happen, but they DO NOT have to. We fear what we do not understand. What you must understand is how to prevent these situations and be comfortable recovering from them even when they do.
You must accept that you will screw up. Your fear develops from a lack of trust in yourself and your audience. But realize, right now, you are not perfect and neither are any of the people in your audience.
You will be speaking to people for the rest of your life. The following steps will get your transformation started today. Join Empowered Prose, eliminate anxiety, and reap the rewards of confident communication.
Step #1: Expect to Screw Up!
You will make errors in life. There is no truth more absolute. Unfortunately, we develop an overwhelming arrogance that leads us to believe we should never make a mistake.
Such arrogance is paralyzing, and that is exactly why people fail to act. Only when you accept that you are going to mess up will you experience the confidence to act in any scenario and own your life.
How many people have failed to ask for a raise, approach a potential companion, or aggressively market his or her business out of fear that something will go wrong in the communication process? You have felt these fears, and, assuredly, you can look back on the missed opportunities that resulted from your weakness.
Step #2: Prepare to Succeed!
It is easy to fix the problem described above —-> Master the skills of an effective communicator!
How does that relieve anxiety? Preparation is the key to success. Knowing what you will face and how to face it takes away the unknown.
It is completely irrational to think you can excel at anything without proper preparation. You should never expect such an outcome!
Instead, you practice. You learn the tools to approach other people. You learn what to say and how and when to say it. You open your ears, read your audience, and put your ego aside.
Step #3: Embrace your audience as the equally flawed humans they are!
You are not under attack! The audience is not your enemy. They are there to learn from you not hurt you. Because we fear speaking to other people our minds subconsciously tell our bodies to take cover. We hide, fidget, and look around.
When you decide to come out of your cocoon, to see your audience as the naturally flawed humans they are, you become a new person. You stand calmly, with your chest out and realize that nobody is going to hurt you. You are the center of attention because people want to know what you have to say.
Your transition to empowerment is easy!
Your transformation starts with a decision. I finally made the decision after being pushed to banish the podium for years. Out from the podium, I connected with my audience like never before. I will never return to my cocoon.
Let us lead you to the confidence you deserve to have. We want you to experience the same excitement and success we have had. All it takes is a single decision to change your life forever!
